About This Quote

The author of this quote, George Orwell, was fascinated by the ability to connect. But he also thought it was sad that people can’t see each other when they want to. He wrote in his essay, “A Clergyman’s Daughter,” that after writing a book about his experiences in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, he realized that he could not see his friends in Spain. Orwell had to write letters in English in order to be able to communicate with people he had known for years.

This is because everyone could only communicate with people who spoke the same language. His friend, Robert Harris, who was an editor at Harlesden Library where Orwell worked, would translate Orwell’s Spanish stories into English so that people could read them here in England even though they could not understand the language written on the pages.
